The third grade class kicked off  2008,  "The Year of the Rat",  with a dragon head parade through the elementary halls.  The annual Chinese celebration begins with the new moon in late January or early February marking the beginning of spring in China and ends 15 days later with a latern festival.  While studying the Asain culture, students hand paint and cut paper lanterns, make fish kites, and design their own dragon head box.  Following the parade the students are then treated to Chinese food, complete with chop sticks and fortune cookies.  Through their study on the Chinese culture, students learn about ancient customs, governmental differences, and world geography.
