Arrival and Pick-Up

The first bell rings at 7:55 a.m. and the Kindergarten will be dismissed at 2:55.  The bus children will be taken out to the buses in front of the gym and the children who will be picked up will be taken to the area in front of the Elementary.  Children arriving between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. will sit down outside of their classroom.  This will be a quiet reading time.  There will be a teacher on hall duty supervising the students.    We ask that after the first week of school that parents leave their child at the door and allow them to come into the room on their own and put their own things up.  This helps teach responsibility.   Please let  me know if there is ever a change in who picks up your child by writing me a note in your child’s notebook.   In order to keep your child safe,   I will not send your child with anyone else or anywhere else other than where you originally indicated unless I have a note from you or you have called and left a message at the school.

Dress Code

The school dress code applies to grades Pre-K through 6th.  Please refer to the dress code section of your student handbook.

Breakfast and Lunch

Students will need to go to the Elementary office in the mornings before school to pay for breakfasts, lunches and ice cream.   Please send all money, for whatever reason, in an envelope or zip-lock bag labeled with your child’s name and the purpose for which the money is intended.

M.O.O.S.E. Notebooks and Homework

Your child will bring home their M.O.O.S.E. Notebook every night.  It contains 4 pockets for their weekly newsletter/behavior sheet, homework, important notes, and finished work to keep at home.  It also contains a parent-teacher communication notebook for any notes we need to write to each other.   Please check your child’s notebook each night and take out any notes or any work they need to keep at home.

Attendance

It is very important that your child be here everyday unless they are sick.  When they are gone they miss important lessons and concepts.  Whenever your child is absent due to an illness, please try to have a doctor’s note, if possible, or write a note yourself in the Parent-Communication notebook when they return to school so that we can document why they were absent.  If you pick up your child early or bring them late because of a doctor’s appointment, be sure to bring a note from the doctor.

Discipline and Management

Your child’s citizenship grade is based on the following behavior system and rules;

1.      Trustworthiness -  Respect personal space and property.

2.      Truthfulness -   Always tell the truth.

3.     Active Listening – Pay attention and raise your hand.

4.     No Put-Downs-  Help and be kind to others.

5.     Personal Best – On-task and in your work area.

To encourage students to follow the classroom rules, we will reinforce appropriate behavior with encouragement, positive notes home, special privileges, free time, etc.

Our classroom management plan is built around 5 color codes.  Each child has 5 cards which consist of these colors;

Green;  Super!  Everyone begins on green each day.

Yellow;  A card has been moved to show that they have broken a rule.  One point

is deducted from their conduct grade.

Orange; Another card is moved to show they have broken another rule, or continued to break the same rule.  At this point, they lose the privilege of a recess.

Blue;  Another card has been moved and another point is deducted from their citizenship grade.  At this point a note will be sent home to the parents which will need to be signed and returned the next day.

Red;  Another card has been moved and another point deducted.  The student will make a visit to the principal’s office, the parent will be called and a form will be sent home which the parent will need to sign and return the school the next day.

When a child has to make a visit to the office again anytime after the first occurrence, we will call  the parent and the parent will need to decide whether the child will be assigned an In-School-Suspension (I.S.S.) or be picked up from school immediately.  Also, when a student has 10 cards pulled in the same six weeks period, they will be sent to the office, regardless of what color they are on at the time and they will go through the same process as if their color is red.

Your child will have a weekly behavior sheet in their weekly behavior sheet in their M.O.O.S.E  Notebook.  Their “dot” will be colored in each day to show the color they were on at the end of the day.  Your child’s citizenship grade starts at 100 at the beginning of each six weeks period.  Whenever your child’s color has changed, I will write an explanation on his/her dot sheet.

Please don’t be too hard on your child if they have a card moved now and then.  No one is perfect.  However, if the behavior continues, we will need to work together to help your child understand that his or her behavior must improve at school.  I’ll make allowances the first few weeks of school, but I have high expectations for all of my students, both academically and behaviorally.

You may find that cards are pulled more frequently in Kindergarten, but this is mainly because it’s a big transition at first from being here just half-day in Pre-K to all day long.  Discipline problems have to be dealt with immediately in order for all children to be in a successful learning environment.

Thank you for taking the time to read through all of this information.  Please talk about our classroom discipline plan with your child and sign and return this page.

Thank you.
