*Parent tips for helping with reading*
When your child gets stuck on a word, have him/her do the following...
- Check the picture and THINK about the story.
- Reread the sentence, paragraph, or page.
- Think of a word that would make sense there.
When this is unsuccessful, have him do this...
- Look for chunks in the word i.e. th, sh, ou, ee, ch, oo, etc. of for little words i.e. cat in catch, look in looked.
- Slide his finger under the word and say the sounds in ONE BREATH and think of a word that sounds like what he just said.
- Reread again.
- Read to the end of the sentence and then go back to reread. As he's rereading, he needs to think of a word that would make sense or fit there.
Every time your child slows down
or stops on a word, he needs to reread the
sentence.
When your child keeps reading when
it's not making sense or sounding right you need
to do the
following:
- Ask him if it made sense or sounded right.
- Tell him to try it again.
- Tell him to think about the story.
- Ask him if he's listening to himself as he reads.
- At the end of each page, ask him if everything made sense.
Above all else, praise your child
and let them know how proud you are of their
wonderful reading and enjoy the stories. Don't get caught up
in always being right.
